Meta Launches Muse Wonder Flagship AI Models to Rival Anthropic and OpenAI

According to data provided by Meta, the two new models—Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full—have achieved scores approaching those of Anthropic’s top-tier models in reasoning, writing, and coding benchmarks.

Following setbacks in its AI research and development efforts, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg restructured the company’s AI division last year. Since then, the company has released several new AI models and products serving the combined 3.5 billion users across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Muse is Meta’s AI agent application capable of operating various software and applications on behalf of users; within weeks of its launch last month, it topped app store charts.

The release of Muse Wonder comes amid growing industry concerns regarding cutting-edge AI models and agents, with some instances of agents going rogue, infiltrating enterprise systems, and disrupting government websites. Zuckerberg is attempting to craft a differentiated narrative for Meta’s technology. While Meta’s underlying model architecture resembles that of Anthropic and OpenAI, he emphasizes that AI should deliver practical value and empower users rather than pose dangers.

In June 2025, Meta hired Alexandr Wang, founder of AI startup Scale AI, as Chief AI Officer, subsequently initiating the development of Muse Wonder. Muse Wonder is the second-generation AI model from the division led by Wang and is Meta’s first product explicitly positioned to compete with frontier models, which typically require immense computational resources to run.

Meta stated that Muse Wonder will soon power certain features of the Muse application. Muse Wonder Full, a higher-performance version, is exclusively available to subscribers of Meta’s advanced AI coding tool, Muse Code.

These two new models, internally codenamed "Watermelon," demonstrate significantly improved coding capabilities compared to Meta’s previous models. The AI coding market is currently dominated by Anthropic and OpenAI, while Meta strives to expand its AI services business targeting other enterprises.

IT Home noted that Muse Wonder encountered turbulence during its development. The New York Times previously reported that Meta paused the model’s pre-training phase in July, delaying its release until this month.

Over the weekend, Zuckerberg teased the new AI model during an Instagram Live stream while grilling meat. He also mentioned another item on the menu: “A big watermelon.”
